CMA Fest Wrap

» Four The Win:The four CMA Music Festival nightly concerts at LP Field were sellouts for the second year in a row, with CMA estimating average daily attendance at 65,000. That number is on par with the 2010 figure, which represented a 16.7% increase over 2009's daily attendance of 56,000. Contributing to this year's figure is a record turnout of 25,000 Saturday (6/11) at the Chevrolet Riverfront Park. "To meet the outstanding sellout of 2010 again in 2011 speaks volumes about the strength of this event, the dedication of our fans, the support of our local community, and the popularity of our music and artists," CMA CEO Steve Moore says. Tickets for the 2012 CMA Music Festival (June 7-10) go on sale July 30.

» Prize To The Challenge:Saturday's (6/11) City Of Hope Celebrity Softball Challenge raised more than $100,000 for the organization's efforts to combat life-threatening diseases. Idol Wrap tops Star News

» Scotty Grow Grow Grows His Vote:So what's next for Nashville Star – uh, we mean American Idol – winner Scotty McCreery, who edged Lauren Alaina Wednesday night (5/25)? The 17-year-old Garner, NC native and 16-year-old Rossville, GA singer both have new singles out – "Love You This Big" and "Like My Mother Does," respectively. The songs are at No. 1 and No. 3 on the iTunes singles chart. Media appearances include June 2's Today show and Aug. 12's Good Morning America. And shouldn't someone invite them to play the big stage at the June 9-12 CMA Music Festival in Nashville?

In their free time, the pair may have a few nickels to rub together, as well. The Associated Press reports that McCreery's record contract includes a $250,000 advance, with runner-up Alaina in for $87,500, which will be doubled if she records an album. Scotty's parents, on the other hand, may have plans for his loot. His hometown WRAL-TV interviewed mom and dad, who say their son plans to continue his education and hopes to attend Nashville's star-making Belmont University while working on his burgeoning music career.

» Sara's Party Seen:Sara Evans celebrated her recent No. 1 hit "A Little Bit Stronger" in Nashville Wednesday (5/25), her first such gathering since "A Real Fine Place To Start" topped the charts in 2005. Evans hobnobbed with Lady Antebellum's Hillary Scott who, after a rough breakup, co-wrote the track with Luke Laird and Hillary Lindsey. "It was pretty much out of a really bad Lifetime movie," Scott says of the relationship that inspired the song. "I had it as a note in my phone ... every day that goes by that I'm not in contact with him I get stronger." The tune went on to be featured in Country Strong and became an anthem for Evans' fans. "I had no idea that it would have the emotional response that it's had," Evans says. "I've had people come up to me every single day and say, 'Oh my gosh, your song's helped me through so much. It's been my theme song.'" Sara performed "Stronger" on Tuesday's Dancing With The Stars finale (5/24). Watch here.

» The Show (And Town) Must Go On: Kenny Chesney wasn't sure that carrying on with his planned tour stop in Tuscaloosa was appropriate following April's tornadoes, but Wednesday night's show (5/25) changed his mind. "I didn't know if we were doing the right thing," he admits. "But after tonight I am convinced that this town needed something to look forward to." Guests included Uncle Kracker and Mac McAnally, with Chesney's performance of Alabama's "My Home's In Alabama" becoming what the singer called "as emotional of a moment that we have ever had onstage."

Chesney lunched with University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban, who has donated $50,000 toward rebuilding. Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox thanked Kenny and team for donating show proceeds to GiveTuscaloosa.com. Contributions are still being accepted online, by phone (205-758-7588) and by mail (checks payable to "Tuscaloosa Disaster Relief Fund," P.O. Box 020410, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401).

» Swap Meet:The tornado relief benefits that Oklahomans Blake Shelton and Reba performed this week in their home state were no ordinary shows. Rather than straight-up sets of their hits, the two performers traded hits. "This is beginning to feel a little bit like a song war," Shelton said, according to News OK. "I've got four songs. You've got 80." Reba replied, "I'm over here if you need me." The Durant, OK concerts benefited the Tushka Disaster Relief Fund. Donations are still being accepted via text ("OKGIVE" to 27722 for a $10 donation) and by mail (checks payable to Tushka Disaster Relief Fund, 101 SE 1st Street, Tushka, OK 74525). Full review here.

Luke Bryan and the Doobie Brothers are the latest pairing to perform CMT Crossroads. The episode will feature Bryan's "Rain Is A Good Thing," "Do I" and "Country Girl (Shake It For Me)," and the DBs' "Black Water," "Long Train Runnin'" and "China Grove." "Their music was such an iconic part of my growing up," Bryan says. The special will be taped before an invitation-only Nashville audience and airs June 24.

» I Can Ride For Miles & Miles: Dierks Bentley's Columbus, OH Miles & Music For Kids charity motorcycle ride raised more than $143,000 for the local Nationwide Children's Hospital. Approximately 1,000 bikers covered the eight-mile stretch, which ended with a concert for an additional 4,000 attendees. Miles & Music events in Chicago and Nashville also are planned for this year with dates TBA. More here.

» Mezcal For My Men...:What's in that glass, Toby Keith? Anyone who's been to his show recently may have asked that question following the Big Dog Daddy's customary "Beer For My Horses" toast to firefighters, soldiers and law enforcement. And now we know! Turns out, Keith will "raise up his glass" with a stiff pour of his own Wild Shot Mezcal. "The tradition and history of Mezcal is magical to me, and dates back to 16th-century warriors celebrating the defeat of their enemies," Keith says. And that ties in nicely to the theme of the song, eh?

» In Case You Missed It: Brad Paisley and Alabama performed "Old Alabama" during Tuesday's Good Morning America (5/24) and Wednesday's (5/25) The View, as Paisley promoted the release of This Is Country Music. "I love country music and I love being a part of it," he told GMA's Robin Roberts. "We wrote this album as a way of saying this is how we see it."

Big Doin's

John Rich Gets His Trump Card: "I have a $250,000 check for St. Jude Children's Hospital in my pocket right now as I speak to you," John Rich told us Monday morning after a sleepless night celebrating his Celebrity Apprentice win. And that check was the point all along for Rich, who never wavered in his approach, ultimately raising more than $1.3 million. Much of the live New York finale focused on the final task assigned to Rich and co-finalist Marlee Matlin. A timing gaffe between Rich and his event's headliners Def Leppard made for tense moments, but the country singer reverted to his day job to perform a few songs acoustically, including the new ditty, "Don't Fire Me, Mr. Trump."

Most of his fellow contestants returned for the last show, with Mark McGrath encapsulating the season well: "Marlee had the biggest week of Celebrity Apprentice," he said. "John Rich had the best season ever in Celebrity Apprentice." Conflict and competition were set aside as Matlin signed along to Rich's performance of his "For The Kids. As for the most unexpected moment of the night, at least in Rich's mind: "I was surprised Donald Trump put on that cowboy hat I brought him. He looked like John Wayne!" Within hours, Rich was off to the media races, visiting live with the Today show, Regis & Kelly and sitting in with Access Hollywood. Look for him on Thursday's Ellen DeGeneres Show. Click the links for video and download the St. Jude-benefiting "For The Kids" here.

» You Call This A Rehearsal? More than 13,000 fans gathered Saturday at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena for a rehearsal like no other. Rather than pace herself through a low-key, peek-behind-the-curtain Speak Now Tour run-through that ended up raising $750,000 for tornado victims, Taylor Swift and a cast of dozens put on a full-production show that easily topped her elaborate Fearless World Tour. As her set's huge red curtain pulled back for the opening number "Sparks Fly," the crowd was overwhelmed with a menagerie of performers, props, plotlines, gadgetry, imagery and instrumentation on a scale that was hard to fully comprehend.

Among these were (inhaling deeply) gilded staircases and a gazebo, a stage-wide HD video screen, four ornately framed screens hanging in front of the main screen, eight dancers, a grand piano, sparkler bearers hanging from the light rig, snow, church pews, a ukulele, a minister and wedding party, fireworks, a tree,  huge bells emblazoned with "XIII," a front porch, Cirque du Soleil-like acrobats, a banjo, a bridge, lifts that launched dancers and Swift onto the stage, a glitter storm,  more trees, confetti, a ballerina, zombies, eight wardrobe changes and a flying balcony Swift used to sail over the crowd during the "Love Story" encore. Speak now? Mission accomplished. People will definitely be talking about this show. Check out her performance of "Story Of Us" here.

» Hall Star Team: Reba McEntire, Jean Shepard and Bobby Braddock received country music's highest honor Sunday night at an invitation-only gathering at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Songwriter Braddock reveled in performances of his classics including Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton ("Golden Ring"); Tracy Lawrence with his 1996 No. 1 "Time Marches On" and Billy Currington on his recent No. 1, "People Are Crazy." Vince Gill was among the performers honoring Shepard, singing her hit "I Want To Go Where No One Knows Me." George Jones officially escorted Shepard into the Hall, earning her quip, "George, thanks for showing up."

Reba was serenaded with musical tributes by Trisha Yearwood and Susie McEntire on "How Blue;" Gill with "Somebody Should Leave;" Garth Brooks performing "Whoever's In New England;" and Kelly Clarkson and Martina McBride with an incredible version of the 1993 Reba and Linda Davis No. 1, "Does He Love You." Hall of Famer Dolly Parton handled the induction. Parton joked that through the years "we've had enough hair to stuff a mattress." Reba summed things up by saying, "Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for being my friends, my helpers along the way. I couldn't have done any of this without you, and by God, I wouldn't have wanted to."

» We'll Billboard You Later: A glammed-up Taylor Swift received three honors at Sunday night's 2011 Billboard Music Awards. The singer-songwriter beat out Justin Bieber, Susan Boyle, Eminem and Lady Antebellum to take home the Top 200 Billboard Artist trophy. In addition, she received the Top Country Artist honor, as well as the Top Country Album award for Speak Now. Keith Urban took the stage for a mock-banjo duel with the show's host, actor Ken Jeong (The Hangover II), before charming the audience with " Long Hot Summer" from his Get Closer album. Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" may have taken home the Top Country Song title, but it was their performance of " Just A Kiss" that had the crowd screaming. On the red carpet, the trio revealed their post-awards celebration plans, which were limited to dinner and a few drinks. "I've got to get home because I've got my family reunion this weekend," the group's Hillary Scott explained.

» CMT'ing Off: Big & Rich, Toby Keith, the Zac Brown Band and Luke Bryan have been added to the list of performers for the 2011 CMT Music Awards. This will be Big Kenny and John Rich's first televised appearance as a duo in more than three years and their first CMTMA performance since 2005. In addition, host Kid Rock will duet with Sheryl Crow. The awards air Wednesday, June 8 at 8pm ET on the network and CMT.com

» Dr. Darius: During the commencement address for the Medical University of South Carolina Friday (May 20), keynote speaker Darius Rucker received an honorary diploma from the institution. The school holds a special place in Rucker's heart for two reasons: his mother was a long-time employee of the university, and he was recently named to the board of the Children's Hospital. The singer-songwriter promises to hang his new diploma prominently in his Charleston home, noting, "That way everyone should know to call me Dr. Rucker."

» Whose Pen Has Your Booth Been Under? Shania Twain is scheduled to make her first appearance at CMA Music Festival in 15 years Friday, June 10. Twain will sign copies of her autobiography From This Moment On at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena from 2-4pm. The event is open to the public.

» Voice Carries: A decade-long career as a chart-topping performer is one thing, but starring on a hit TV show is something else. And Blake Shelton isn't too proud to embrace it, even at the gas station. "It was one o'clock in the morning and I just got out of the studio," Shelton says. "This cute girl was running the cash register. She looked at me and made this face like, 'Hey! Are you the guy from that show?' And I was like, 'Yeah, you're damn right I am!' It was so odd to me because it just shows you the power of television." The third battle round of The Voice airs Tuesday (5/24).

» I Feel Fine: Sugarland and tourmates Little Big Town and Matt Nathanson poked fun at Harold Camping's rapture prediction during their stop in Holmdel, NJ Saturday night (5/21). The party of seven collaborated on a live cover of R.E.M.'s "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" (watch  here). "Thanks for sharing the rapture with us tonight," Jennifer Nettles told the crowd after closing the show with the tune. "Be safe going home."
